Design

Unlike other manufacturers, Samsung did not support the fashion for the ugly cuts in the displays, which Apple introduced to the iPhone X in due time. The designers quite quickly came up with new ways to hide the front camera with the necessary sensors, and Samsung chose perhaps the best option. The idea of a cut-out in the working area of the display is no longer new — Huawei was the first to propose it to the Nova 4, and a few hours later Samsung showed the Galaxy A8S. The rest of the design elements seem familiar: a curved screen on the sides, a thin bottom frame, aluminum sidelined sides, a glass back panel and a triple camera, oriented horizontally as always.

Display

From year to year, Samsung’s flagship displays are recognized as the best among smartphones. It is unlikely that the new AMOLED panel will be an exception. It is characterized by a diagonal of 6.2 inches, an “elongated” aspect ratio of 19: 9, a resolution of Quad HD + or 1440: 3040 pixels (density of 550 ppi), as well as certification according to the HDR10 + standard. Thanks to the use of a round cutout and minimal frames, the display occupies more than 90% of the front panel. Also noteworthy is a major innovation for Samsung — an ultrasound fingerprint reader built under the screen, which is faster and more accurate than a more affordable optical scanner.

Iron and performance

There are no surprises here. We are, as always, waiting for two top chipsets: Exynos 9820 and Snapdragon 855 branded platform. In Russia, the version will be sold on an 8-nanometer Samsung chipset, which has two custom Samsung cores with a clock frequency of 2.7 GHz, two ARM Cortex-A75 with a frequency of 2.3 GHz, four ARM Cortex-A55 with a frequency of 1.8 GHz and a graphic accelerator ARM Mali-G76 M12. It is alleged that the new product is ahead of its predecessor in terms of graphics by 40%, and its energy consumption has decreased by 35%. The amount of RAM compared to Galaxy Note9 has not changed — 8 GB. However, the older model Galaxy S10 + received a version of as much as 12 GB of RAM.

It is obvious that the flagship Samsung at least until the release of Xiaomi Mi 9 will remain the most productive Android-smartphone. This is indicated by preliminary benchmark data — the Galaxy S10 is a couple of tens of thousands of points ahead of the Huawei Nate 20 Pro on the Kirin 980.

Cameras

If in the previous top-end Samsung smartphone — Galaxy Note9, there was a dual main camera, now there are three modules. To the main 12 megapixel module (with a variable aperture ƒ / 1.5-2.4, viewing angle 77 degrees) and an auxiliary 12 megapixel (with a double optical zoom, aperture / 2.4), a wide-angle module with a 16 megapixel resolution and a lens with a diaphragm 123 / 2.2 and a viewing angle of 123 degrees. A similar combination is used in the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. By the way, DxOMark experts have already tested testing the Korean camera, assessing it … at the same 109 points as the Chinese camera phone.

Optical stabilizer works only in the main module and telephoto, but in the «width» it is not. But Samsung claims that it has created an advanced digital stabilizer for video. Artificial intelligence also received improvements — it now defines 30 scenes instead of 20. The front camera has a resolution of 10 megapixels and a lens with an aperture of ƒ / 1.9. Samsung finished two old modules and added versatility to the camera by adding a wide-angle one. A quick review of DxOMark only confirmed the assumption that we have one of the best camera phones on the market.

Battery

Batteries from top Samsung smartphones were always not very capacious, and the Galaxy S10 was no exception. The novelty uses a 3400 mAh battery, which is 400 mAh more than the Galaxy S9. Note the fast charging power of 15 W, the second version of the wireless charging power of 15 W, as well as the ability to recharge wirelessly other gadgets — for example, Galaxy Buds wireless headphones. The competitor Huawei Mate 20 Pro has the same opportunity.

One line

It is necessary to note the protection against dust and moisture IP68, support for the modern standard Wi-Fi 802.11ax, a slot for microSD memory cards up to 512 GB, a USB Type-C connector, a 3.5-mm headphone jack, and an NFC module.

Conclusion

It seems that in the case of the Galaxy S10 is not always a progressive Samsung decided to keep up with the times. Here you can find a balanced triple camera, wireless charging of other devices, a new Wi-Fi standard, the first smartphone display with HDR10 + and, finally, a neat cutout in the display that distinguishes the new product from the iPhone XS and Huawei Mate 20 Pro with their ugly eyebrows». Well, in the appendage, we note the maximum performance for Android devices, not so often found in the flagships 3.5-mm jack and a fingerprint scanner integrated under the screen. Perhaps all this makes the Samsung Galaxy S10 the new king of smartphones on Android. Another question, for how long? After a month, Huawei will release the P30 Pro, which at least claims to be the main camera phone on the market.
